Starting a business in the USA as an immigrant

Start by choosing a structure — an LLC is the most common for small businesses because it protects your personal assets and is simple to run. Then register the LLC in your state and get an EIN (Employer Identification Number) from the IRS, which is free and acts as your business tax ID. Non-residents can get an EIN too.

With your EIN and formation documents you can open a business bank account, apply for licenses, get a resale certificate to buy wholesale, and start building business credit. Depending on your product you may also need local permits.
